It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota… First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car – for example here – carquotes.fateback.com

Take someone who KNOWS what they are doing with you, don’t buy based on looks buy based on dependability and don’t get anything to expensive chances are HIGH that you’ll wreck it, shortly! You’ll still have buying what you WANT to look forward to and your insurance won’t be as expensive.

Check for water marks inside the car-could have been in a flood.
Check the body over–could have been a wreck.
Check the tail pipe for black or white soot–could have bad rings/valves.
Check for any leaks under the car.
Test drive the car and see how it handles.
If you know some one that knows cars, take them with you.

Check out prices on the car you are looking at. Even if you can get one at "Wholesale Blue Book", they are still making money.

You do not have to put any money up to just talk. If you feel that you are being pressured, get up and walk out.
There are a lot of cars for sale

The best advice I can give you is pay with cash. DO NOT finance your first used car. Buy something that you can afford and pay with cash.

Second, regardless of what car you decide to purchase NEVER finalize the deal until you have had the car thoroughly inspected by a certified mechanic.

I’d go with an import, (Mazda, Toyota, Honda) With a 4 cyl engine and manual transmission.

    Try Craigslist for your area

I am assuming this is a used car you are buying….must, must have it checked out by a good, competent mechanic on a hoist…I believe PeP Boys does these inspections…..make sure to look for leaks of any kind and have the brakes thoroughly checked. Those could be very expensive repairs…..also air condit. repairs are very expensive….if it has A/C start vehicle and let it run for 5-8 minutes with A/C on full blast….if there is a leak it will start getting warmer before the 8 mins is up…..have mechanic look very close at the suspension system also……Driveway Mechanic************
